Being at sixes and sevens...

Something I am going to practice with a colleague... Yes, I have 53 students and try to blog in the middle of everything. And my work is certainly not about writing... I wish I had more time.

"Blaming the victim it's all about power..."

Arthritis, strumectomy, psychosis and psychiatry…

Anna Luise Kirkengen.

[Updated October 5]. I have referred to what Anna Luise Kirkengen has written about a young woman suffering from an aggressive arthritis, with several rheumasurgical interventions and a strumectomy (in Swedish below). After her first delivery she became psychotic.

Psychiatrists didn’t want to believe that she had been raped and earlier also exposed to sexual abuse as a child, until she met a young doctor in training, who listened and believed her. The recovery came very quickly. Read here about what I have referred to below in Swedish.

---

Se också hans bok ”Just like us, only more - Stories of survival - from the psychotherapy room.” Och läs även här).

Denna nya relation förde dock fram nya aspekter.

Voices in Sweden about the financial crisis and the state of affairs in the world…

the family Bonnier eating dinner.

[Slightly edited October 5, quite angrily written, so I wonder how my English was?]. Voices in Sweden about the financial crisis and the state of affairs in the world today: It has been about creating needs in a constantly, perpetually ascending spiral in societies all over the world. A have-mentality. But do we need to be slaves under consumption?

The bank bosses have gotten million bonuses and million parachutes.

The worst enemy to the finance and corporation world is contentedness.

Still the most important idea of business is to create needs and desires (or cravings) in a constantly ascending spiral. Nobody shall be satisfied.

Quite ironically: at the same time we are blamed for being too demanding!!! One of the contradictions and confusions again!?

It stood about the bourgeois’ scale of value and view on man. Are there people wanting to live outside their (the bourgeois’) conception of the world, in another world we think is possible a writer wonders?

Can the time come when having two cars will be seen as something embarrassing and not – as it is now – something enviable.

One writer writes that the modern “extortion”, with the help of media, advertisement, pr-consults, lifestyle-agents and trademarks, forces a lifestyle on people that has shown to be deeply destructive, but all this is (or could be, even if I think it is difficult, with all the pressure around) something one can do something about oneself, in contrast to the wage-slavery during the former turn of the century.

In the middle of this I saw that tonight (or tomorrow, I didn’t look properly) they are sending a new version of “Let’s dance”, this time the competitors are learning to dance on ice (with skates!!). Yes, this is what people are entertained with…

One can rebel against oneself and ones own have-desire, the desire you have been enticed into. You can start to grin at medias holding up the rich as models and idols (as even the newspaper ICA-kuriren here in Sweden started to a couple of years ago, and then I unsubscribed); the same medias who have been worshiping the finance-men and managers whom now have thrown the world into crisis. Haven’t they “forfeited their pound”?

No, they need to make even worse things?? But people lower on the status-scale failing aren't apologized, sometimes at all. Yes, people are treated differently, depending on their status, where on the scale they stand. What about people's equal value only seen to the fact that they are born to this world? Quite ironically. And others get ashamed for much smaller "crimes”!! That about proportions…

This obsession with the rich and successful, supplied by the media, doesn’t it all of a sudden feel incredibly out-of-date?

One person here writes about (not least) a moral fiasco for Bush, for a politics that has failed so much and in so many areas.

Does the free market actually function? Isn’t it ruled by a few actors actually?

One writer thinks it would be honorable if the ones analyzing the finance-capital as a positive, creative power in the economy some years ago (the written words are still there, and can be read even today), stating that the new global market with all its insurances and reinsurances is sound, could apologize for their analysis. Admit to what they wrote some years ago.

Or that they at least could search on the words “the economy’s ability to function” and get surprised over that they only a few years ago thought that a big welfare state and high taxes are checking for the (the economic, and overall) “growth.” Sweden and the Scandinavian countries are proofs that a big welfare state and quite high taxes aren't curbing for the economical growth? But our current government is now rapidly destroying this? (but the situation here hasn't made us lazy workers I think. We are, or have been, hard workers? And interested in other countries and phenomena in the world? Our society hasn't been a closed society, even if we have had social democratic, i.e., "left wing", government for long? But a government that has turned more and more to the right, yes!).

The most usual prevarication today is the statement that the problem is about “anonymous owners”, which means owners not steered by a steady “owner hand”, like the Wallenberg’s or Bonnier’s in Sweden.

People try to earn money on money, instead of investing them in our real lives.

The financial crisis isn’t an accident, but an element belonging to the capitalism.

It’s the taxpayers who have to pay for the speculators loans, instead of seeing their money going to school, care and nursing, or what it’s called in English. All those instances are forced aside by what the (many times well paid) speculators have done.

The ones winning on all this are the members in corporations’ managements, because the system makes so they get their bonuses and bizarre wages apart from the fact if the businesses goes well or not.

It’s a myth that the market is stable; the ones winning on these situations are those living on the differences in prizes, so what’s happening isn’t an accident.

How can one interpret our current finance minister saying that the world economy is influenced by “raw avariciousness”?

Can there be two comments to this?

1/ He is an eager supporter of market economy and this statement only reinforces the myth that this ought not to happen, that the crisis has nothing to do with the system itself.

2/ On top of it he individualizes the problem. He says that the speculators are greedy in the same manner as he says that the ones with no job are lazy!

What we see now is a saving-action for the capitalism. There is no movement which can take over. What’s so dangerous about our time is that there is no strong worker’s movement, and this increases the risk somebody else takes over, in the worst case the fascism.

What corporal punishment can cause…

[Edited with more text and links October 5]:

"The fight or flight reaction * occurs in humans during times of stress or danger. The sympathetic nervous system causes a boost of adrenaline and is extremely powerful, but it doesn't always work to our advantage.

Prolonged exposal to adrenaline can damage your body and the repeated exposal to threatening situations can be a source for emotional and developmental problems later in life.

Many victims of torture and abuse, such as prisoners of war, experience post traumatic stress disorder and suffer feelings of alienation, rage and guilt, some succumbing to suicidal thoughts.

People may encounter the fight or flight reaction not just in situations of perceived physical danger, but shouting and verbal threats also carry a freight of terror straight into our base brain.

Remarkably with all we know children are treated to high doses of adrenaline each time they are shouted at or threatened with corporal punishment. And this is no different than what military personnel suffered when they were essentially told they would be tortured if they did not cooperate.

The threat of imminent violence carries this reaction which in repeated situations or prolonged durations leads to physical and mental disorders which can permanently affect a child's future."

The heading of this video was "What Corporal Punishment Does to the Endocrine System."

* See what Bosch writes about False Power Anger (fight??) and helplessness/powerlessness (flight??). Also see a posting under the label help and powerless victim, with quotations from Alice Miller's book "The Truth Will Set You Free."

Also see Andrew Vachss about emotional abuse of children:
"...of all the many forms of child abuse, emotional abuse may be the cruelest and longest-lasting of all.”

"Emotional abuse is the systematic diminishment of another. It may be intentional or subconscious (or both), but it is always a course of conduct, not a single event. It is designed to reduce a child's self-concept to the point where the victim considers himself unworthy—unworthy of respect, unworthy of friendship, unworthy of the natural birthright of all children: love and protection."
---

Contradictions and confusions…

Some thoughts on the bike to work, threw those words down quickly on paper when I came to work, before the first student. I write them down here almost as I wrote them down this morning:

Limit setting for children are hotter than ever again, but letting the market totally free is ok, absolutely nothing wrong with or anything to worry about. Children, on the contrary, need restrictions, restrictions for instance the market doesn’t need. How would it be if children didn't get restrictions? Where would it end? Or it's for "their own good" and the world's good? Those children will grow up to good citizens, capable of handling and managing a free market or something?

Liberals are talking about freedom in one circumstance, but discipline in another.

Integrity – what about?

Respect – what about?

True, genuine respect and capacity to that sort of respect…

Freedom for who? And whose freedom?

Confused (and confusing) liberals here at least can’t really point to proofs or explain where they have got things from. Relying on their feelings?? At the same time as they can be depreciating and belittling other peoples’ feelings! And claiming other peoples’ lack of proofs.

Came to think about integrity violations

You (the people on the bottom and children) need to earn your freedom?? I wonder if all are entitled or worth freedom in a liberal’s world actually if you scratch on the surface?

The same confusing messages many of us got early??

When I was student at a folk high school here in Sweden after quitting the gymnasium we spoke about let-go (låt-gå in Swedish, or laissez-faire), authoritarian and democratic leadership (in teachers in this case I think). More than thirty years ago we were learned that the democratic leadership was the best.

Have some (many) liberals misunderstood what "freedom" is? Confused it with laissez-faire combined with authoritarianism? I wonder quite ironically.

More about avariciousness...

[Upgraded October 3, see the end]. People here write: We have been living in the de-regulation mantra for several decades. Now the neolibberal utopia is falling as a house of cards. Even our right wing finance minister is talking about the need of regulations – international regulations.

Recently he spoke about the too greedy finance brokers on Wall Street when he got interviewed in the news here.

But isn’t the capitalism’s motive power the avariciousness?

Unregulated it eats itself up? It’s therefore a political against-power is needed which manage to redistribute and maintain a solidary society.

Neither the totally regulated nor the totally unregulated society is good?? Instead we need a sort of balance between the political and economical power? Sometimes called mixed economy, sometimes called welfare-capitalism.

Reagan-Thatcher and their armies of economists and advisers rebelled against this system to make place for a new capitalism – the neoliberal.

Regulations were torn down; laws were written/created according to the capital’s interests, the market took the political sphere over, taxes and other restrictions for the capitals’ interests were wept away. That generation’s neoliberal politicians are carrying the responsibility for the deep capitalist crisis today.

After a quarter of a century this system, which for a long time created growth but also the most gigantic redistributions of wealth in modern time, explodes or rather implodes.

In parts this break down follows because the financial sector has to become severed from the real economy. More and more fictive values were created.

Joseph Schumpeter, sceptic to the capitalism’s survival but the entrepreneurship’s special philosopher, described a theme of our time: the innovations and the new technology’s creative destroyment. That’s right; there’s much less creativity today I feel. In a time when we should have been more creative to solve different problems. Here the school has become much more theoretical for instance. Also a sign of our time. What about developing (or maintaining) the whole person?

Today there is very little creation, the more destruction. Most of all it is the belief and trust to the society which has been gnawed in pieces. A fundamental mistrust is demonstrated against the financial system, its speculative elements.

It stands in wikipedia about welfare capitalism:

“Esping-Andersen categorised three different types of welfare states in the 1990 book 'The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism'. Though increasingly criticised, these classifications remain the most commonly used in distinguishing types of modern welfare states, and offer a solid starting point in such analysis.

The three different types are the 'Social Democratic' Model, as exemplified by the Scandinavian countries and particularly Sweden; the 'Liberal' Model, often related to the USA, Canada, Australia and increasingly the United Kingdom; and thirdly, the 'Conservative' Model, which is indicative of Germany, as well as France, Austria and Italy.

Recently in the US there has been a trend away from its form of welfare capitalism, as corporations have reduced the portion of compensation paid with health care, and shifted from defined benefit pensions to employee-funded defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s.

It should be noted that the original definition of welfare capitalism, as used by the 19th century German economist, Gustav Schmoller, called for government to provide for the welfare of workers and the public, via social legislation, among other means. (And not to rely on business to do this.) While Schmoller's work is little available in English, his influence can be seen in the modern European welfare states.”

And I wonder about the roots to this, and what’s driving people creating those destructive things?

Here are different articles in Swedish newspapers and blogs, two of those I have reffered to above.

Addition later in the morning: delegation has been something popular on work-places here. The bosses delegate responsibility to their employees. Give them responsibility. Of course that's good in many ways, people can grow by this. But - it can also be misused (and is misused I can lively imagine quite ironically). Responsibility can be delegated that the boss ought to take! Bosses can push responsibility and (a lot of) work away. Including the risk of being blamed!?

Can it be something similar with the economy, the society, politics: the ones in power are pushing the responsibility away on a diffuse, not visible or touchable market? Who is then to blame?

And about greed: some claim that greed isn't only bad, that it makes people want to work hard etc. But I would claim that there in fact exists people who works hard with no such drives!! But with other drives and motives. Just with the wish to create something good, not only for themselves - OR for others, but for us all.

Yes, what are driving us?? What are our motives/motivations? Why are we driven by what we are driven? Do we have to remain the same a whole life? Can we change and do we ought to change?

In the shower I thought further on responsibility. People are paid fantasy-salaries (get bonuses and retirement-insurances) for their work because of the enormous responsibility. Bosses on lower levels are also more well-paid than earlier. Even though they are told to delegate work...

But it differs on what sort of responsibility you have... We working with human beings aren't worth a scrap of what those high paid people are worth! What does that say? About what we value as a society and in the (whole) world?

And it was this with limitless needs again... To value oneself, or not value oneself... What's sound and what's not sound?

The Dutch therapist Ingeborg Bosch writes about children who have been taught to share at a too early age (something most of us have learned more or less too), and the results of this later. Resulting in that we can't do anything if we don't get anything back. Other people have learned not to value anything they do too...

Upgraded October 3:
A Swedish leader writer this morning:

“Few governments and as few economists confess anything else than laissez-faire. But now these market liberal doctrines are tried.”

He also writes that the nonplussedness as a matter of fact is fundamental (grounded on principles), yes, epidemic and ideological.

Yes, that about responsibility? Convenient and handy to blame the market? You can just leave everything to the market; a phenomenon you can’t touch upon.

What does this say actually?

This about responsibility and blame…
